Frequently Asked Questions
-
What is the minimum age to start?
For children who are 2 years old by December 31st, we offer Tiny Tots —an introduction to dance, music, and creative movement.
For children who are 3 years old by December 31st, we begin offering intro to ballet and tap classes.
As children grow, they will have the opportunity to explore additional dance disciplines, including Tap, Acrobatics, Hip Hop, Jazz, Stage, Contemporary, and Lyrical training.
When do classes start?
Our dance season runs from September to June. A 10-month commitment is essential to ensure consistent progress and development.
Will I have a good teacher?
Absolutely. The staff at Rise 21 are carefully selected for their exceptional teaching abilities and dedication to helping students reach their full potential.
Our exam instructors are certified and trained through reputable organizations, including the Cecchetti Society(Ballet) and the Canadian Dance Teachers Association (Tap and Jazz).
How do I pay my tuition?
We offer a convenient pre-authorized equal payment option, with tuition automatically withdrawn from your account on the 1st of each month. You can set up your account using automatic debit or credit card options.
You’ll be prompted to set this up when creating your Parent Portal.

What should I wear to dance classes?
Wearing the proper dance attire is essential—it allows teachers to clearly see your movements and provide accurate corrections to help you improve your technique.
Students who arrive without appropriate dancewear may be asked to sit and observe the class or visit the front desk to borrow suitable attire.
Do you have parking?
Yes! Rise 21 Dance Company offers convenient parking right outside the studio. Additional parking is available to the side and back of the main studio and in front of our Studio 5 building.
Where do I buy dance attire and proper shoes?
Rise 21 Dance Company offers a selection of tights, dancewear, foot undies, and ballet shoes available for purchase directly through the studio.
We regularly carry footed, convertible, and footless tights in pink, beige, dark tan, and black.
We also have a collection of used dance shoes—please inquire at the front desk for availability and sizing.

How do I know what level of class to take?
Class placements at Rise 21 Dance Company are based on both age and ability. Our teachers carefully assess each student to ensure they are placed in a level where they will be both challenged and successful.
If you are registering for a competitive or exam program, a dance assessment may be required. This helps us place each dancer in the most suitable class—one that matches their age, skill level, and allows them to feel confident and comfortable.
Can I book a private lesson?
Our teachers are available for private lessons and solo, duo, and trio choreography. Please contact our office for rates and scheduling.
How do I register?
Registration opens in June and continues throughout the summer. You can register online or in person at the studio during office hours.
A registration fee is required to secure your spot in a class. While a limited number of spots may be available from September to December, many classes fill quickly—so we recommend registering early to avoid disappointment.
Do you have shorter programs?
Yes! We offer 4-7 week sessions concurrently with our dance season as well as week-long Dance & Craft Camps during the summer. Check our home page for our Fall, Winter, Spring, and Summer Sessions. These programs are a great way to introduce kids to a variety of dance styles.

Performing is part of dance
What is a Recital?
Our year-end recital is a special event where all students have the opportunity to showcase what they’ve learned throughout the season. It is held at the Michael J. Fox Theatre, located at Burnaby South Secondary School.
For 2026, the recital dates will be posted soon. Check our calendar for important dates to remember.
Recital: Early June 2026
At Rise 21 Dance Company, we believe that every student earns the right to perform. Recreational and Foundation classes will perform in at least one show at the end of the season. Company classes will appear in multiple shows over the weekend.

Refunds
Is there a refund for missed classes or withdrawing from the program?
Rise 21 Dance Company does not issue refunds for missed classes.
If a student needs to withdraw from a class, the office must be notified at least 7 days before the 1st of the month. Otherwise, the full month’s fees will be charged.
Please remember that dance classes are a 10-month commitment. The year-end recital is a key part of the program, and teachers choreograph with the expectation that each student will remain in class through to the end of the season. Last-minute withdrawals impact the entire group.
If your child will be absent from class, we kindly ask that you email the front desk to let us know.

Costumes
Will I have to purchase a costume?
Yes. A $75 costume deposit is required for each class your child is enrolled in (with the exception of Technique and Exam classes). This deposit helps cover the initial cost of fabric and materials, catalogue orders, or store purchases.
If your child withdraws from class before October 15th, the deposit may be refunded. However, if withdrawal occurs after the costume has been started, you will be responsible for the remaining costume cost.
Please note that the $75 deposit is just that—a deposit. There typically is a balance owing once costumes are completed. We make every effort to ensure purchases are considered carefully to keep the costs as reasonable as possible.
